Ride in the Morning, Cook at Night: Our Favourite Day in Tirana
The day we recommend to visitors: a morning on the bike through central Tirana, then an Albanian cooking class in the evening at Cooking Class Tirana on Bardhok Biba.
People ask us this constantly: we have one full day in Tirana, what should we do?
Our honest answer has not changed in a while.
Ride in the morning, cook in the evening.
See the city from a saddle while it is cool, then spend the evening learning to make the food you have been ordering from menus all week without knowing what any of it was.
The riding part we can help with ourselves. For the cooking part, we send people to Cooking Class Tirana, and we have been sending them there long enough to be confident about it.
Why we recommend them specifically
We are not paid to say this. We have taken the class ourselves, we know the owners, and we have watched it grow from a small idea into a highly rated Tirana experience. When we checked its public Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide profiles on 29 August 2026, they showed 534 reviews and a 5.0 average.
The class is run by Dervis, who came to food sideways. He studied finance, found cooking at sixteen, and properly caught it while working in Martha’s Vineyard kitchens at eighteen. He opened his first restaurant in Tirana at twenty-six. He approaches food as both an enthusiast and a researcher: he wants to understand why a dish works, not just how to reproduce it.
He is joined by Maris, a Tirana native who came from law and stayed for the food. Her focus is on family recipes passed from one generation to the next, carrying stories and culture along with their flavour.
The ingredients matter to them more than most places bother with. Dervis handpicks from farms around Tirana on a km0 principle—nothing travels far to get to the table. If you have spent the morning cycling past those hills, that lands differently in the evening.

A word on the raki: it is homemade and stronger than it tastes. Plan your evening accordingly, and do not plan on cycling afterwards.
Why the two go together
There is a practical reason this pairing works, beyond both being enjoyable.
A bike tour front-loads your understanding of the city. In two or three hours you learn how Tirana is actually laid out—that the centre is flat, that Skanderbeg Square connects to the Grand Park down one long boulevard, and where Blloku sits relative to everything else. You stop navigating and start recognising.
A cooking class does the same thing for the food. Before it, a menu in Tirana is a list of unfamiliar words. After it, you know what you are ordering, why it is made that way, and roughly what it should cost. You spend the rest of your trip eating better.
Both are the sort of thing that pays off on day one and keeps paying for the rest of the week. Doing them on the same day is just efficient.
How we would actually schedule it
09:00—collect a bike, or meet the guide. We are at the New Bazaar on Rruga Qemal Stafa, open from 09:00. Mornings are the best riding time in summer, and the light on the boulevard is better before noon.
10:00—ride. Our guided tour runs at 10:00, 14:00 and 17:30 daily and covers the centre, Skanderbeg Square, the Pyramid, Blloku, the Grand Park and Tirana Lake in about two and a half hours at an easy pace. If you would rather go alone, book a rental online and ask us for local route advice.
13:00—bring the bike back, or keep it until the agreed return time. A same-day rental is returned the same calendar day, so confirm the current pickup and return window when booking.
Afternoon—rest. This is not a wasted instruction. You have cycled, and you are about to make and eat a four-hour dinner.
Evening—cook. Bardhok Biba is central and walkable from many of the places visitors stay. Given the wine and raki, walk or take a taxi.
